About

This Show the Way Today website has been developed by the Ministry of Education and the Te Kete Ipurangi website team. It supports Education For Sustainabilty teaching and learning, and has been developed to recognise, and build on, New Zealand’s hosting of the World Environment Day initiative on 5 June 2008.

This website provides a place where schools, wharekura, kura, early childhood centres, and kōhanga reo can share their actions and thinking with each other and the world.

It is an online environment for schools to network and communicate their sustainability thinking and planning, pledges and projects. It is a tool for schools across the world to join New Zealand on 5 June - World Environment Day - a day when we are first to see the sun and can ‘show the way today!’.

The site will go live on 5 June to reveal the activities taking place across the country and the world. Its launch on World Environment Day 2008 is an opportunity to raise awareness and promote action on national environmental issues.

What is World Environment Day?

Started in 1972 and commemorated each year on 5 June, World Environment Day is a United Nations initiative about raising awareness and promoting action on national and global environment issues.

The day's agenda is to:

  • give a human face to environmental issues
  • empower people to become active agents of sustainable and equitable development
  • promote an understanding that communities are pivotal to changing attitudes towards environmental issues
  • advocate partnership, which will ensure all nations and peoples enjoy a safer and more prosperous future.

In 2008, New Zealand is the host of this high-profile global initiative, in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). Find out more about World Environment Day on the UNEP website.

Kick the C02 habit

The theme for World Environment Day 2008 is climate change, with a focus on moving towards a low-carbon economy and lifestyle. ‘Kick the C02 habit’ is the international slogan for the event.
